The road leading to K2Media was long and winding for Kate McKinney and Kiran Ross. But we think the trip was well worth it.

After growing up in Overland Park, Kate headed to college at Saint Mary’s College in South Bend, Indiana, followed by law school at Vanderbilt University School of Law in Nashville, Tennessee. She practiced law in Kansas City for over ten years. Kate re-routed her life a bit in 2007 when she resigned as partner at her law firm. She began freelance writing, first for several law-related websites and blogs and ultimately for many other non-law-related clients including a number of internet marketing firms across the country.

Kiran Ross is also a native Kansas Citian, having attended St. Teresa’s Academy before graduating from college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. After college, Kiran lived in Atlanta and then back in Kansas City, working in sales for hometown company Hallmark. After working for Hallmark for several years, Kiran made the move to pharmaceutical sales. She was a highly successful specialty sales rep for a global Fortune 100 corporation.

Friends for a decade, Kate and Kiran became business partners in early 2008 when they launched a local children’s activities website and blog, KCKidsFun.com. Mothers of young children, they saw a need in Kansas City for a one-stop internet resource for parents looking for family-friendly activities. The site immediately took off with readers and advertisers alike.

Through KCKidsFun, Kate and Kiran became intimately involved in social media as business owners. That involvement and interest evolved as they saw the benefits of the active use of social media first hand. Engaging on a personal level with consumers, potential advertisers, local marketing professionals and media – all of which was possible only through the growing variety of social media tools available.

Kate and Kiran soon found themselves evangelizing to friends and business contacts – even advertisers and community partners of KCKidsFun – about the powers of social media. People sought out their advice on how to position their businesses using various social media outlets. And the Kansas City social media marketing agency K2Media was born.
